CUMMING — October may have just started, but many families in Forsyth County have begun thinking about how they likely can’t afford a special holiday meal.
For years, The Place of Forsyth County has worked to remedy local families’ roadblocks when they realize they are in such a situation at Thanksgiving. Last year, the emergency services, work force development and food support nonprofit distributed food boxes to 125 families within the county.
“This Thanksgiving, we know it will be closer to 200 families,” said Ashley Carroll, food program coordinator. “With the creation of our client choice food pantry, The Market, we realize the importance of adding fresh foods when possible and just how many families struggle to find extra food.”
Eligible families will receive a traditional Thanksgiving box this year, but leaders at The Place said they want to do more in the way of healthy eating.
Residents are asked to donate fresh vegetables and either a turkey or a ham to create more of a homemade feel to the food provided to families.
Those willing to provide food, hold a collection drive, buy a ham or turkey or make a donation toward fresh food items can contact The Place at (770) 887-1098 or ashley@theplaceofforsyth.org.
Families who wish to receive a Thanksgiving meal from The Place can register through Nov. 13. Applicants must present proof of Forsyth County residency and family income.
