A Forsyth County man died Saturday morning after being struck by a van on Canton Highway (Hwy. 20) near the Cherokee County line.

Johnie Baker, 61, reportedly stepped into the path of a Ford E-250 about 7:30 a.m., according to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office.

The driver of the van stopped to render aid, but Baker was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the sheriff’s office.

Spokesman Doug Rainwater said Baker was walking from his home on Canton Highway, trying to cross the road.

“No one knows why he stepped off the curb into the roadway at that moment,” Rainwater said.

The sheriff’s office reported that neither Baker nor the driver showed evidence of impairment from alcohol or drugs.

The crash remains under investigation. No charges have been filed.
