WEST FORSYTH — Gold, blue and green will not be the only colors spotted around West Forsyth High as the school’s Red Cross Club holds the first Color Fest Fun Run on Sept. 19.
The cost to participate in the event, a 5K fundraiser for the Northeast Georgia Chapter of the American Red Cross, is $20 for anyone 10 and older and $10 for those younger.
People can register up to the day of the race, but those who do so today will be guaranteed a T-shirt. Club representatives will be at West’s football game tonight to help people register.
Starting with donuts and music at 8:30 a.m. at the football stadium Sept. 19, participants will begin the untimed race at the baseball parking lot, according to Matthew Adams, a special education teacher at West and Red Cross Club sponsor.
They will be given a packet of colored power to throw up in the air at the beginning before getting hit with more colors along the route that circles the campus.
Colored powder will supposedly remain on the ground for the homecoming festival that night.
Adams said this is the biggest fundraiser the club has held forming in January.
“There wasn’t a Red Cross club at any other school in the county, but at schools I’ve been at in other counties they did things like blood drives and fundraisers,” Adams said.
The club has also done coin collections and sent hygiene kits to Nepal.
“For this one, we thought we wanted to go on a bigger scale and get a larger donation to [the Red Cross],” he said.
He said just more than 100 people have registered so far, and he hopes 150-200 show up.
Runners can register online at www.mypaymentsplus.com. Forsyth County students can log in with their student ID numbers.
Those who are not students can log in as a guest of Forsyth County Schools. Once logged in, click on the American Red Cross Club, then click on Color Run registration.
Donations can also be submitted on the same website.
