WEST FORSYTH — Students at Liberty Middle School were evacuated as a precaution Thursday afternoon while maintenance staff worked to fix a ventilation unit.

Forsyth County Schools spokeswoman Jennifer Caracciolo said the school was evacuated after the heating and air unit in the media center experienced motor issues. The situation was under control, she said.

As of 4 p.m., Forsyth County Fire Department units had left the campus and students had returned inside.

“Maintenance and first responders arrived and students returned to the building when it was deemed safe,” Caracciolo said.

A similar situation unfolded last month at West Forsyth High.

Students and staff proceeded with classes Feb. 19 while under a medical lockdown caused by a malfunctioning ventilation unit in the media center. Two halls were cleared for a short time.
