Daves Creek Drive will be temporarily closed to through traffic at Old Atlanta Road beginning Aug. 5.
The closure will allow for Daves Creek to be raised and realigned with Old Atlanta to improve drivers’ sight distance and turning angle.
While Daves Creek is closed, Gilbert Road will be signaled as the traffic detour, said Tim Allen, Forsyth County’s assistant director of engineering.
“The planned grade change of Daves Creek Drive requires the road to be closed during the reconstruction phase,” Allen said, “and it will be reopened as soon as it is paved.”
The project will also include construction of left- and right-turn lanes on Old Atlanta at Daves Creek.
The road is expected to re-open to through traffic by Sept. 8.
The work is part of an intersection improvement project funded by the special purpose local option sales tax program.
County commissioners awarded a bid in May to Martin Construction, Inc. for about $368,000 for the intersection improvements.
Allen said the project was first identified in a previous 1-cent sales tax referendum, SPLOST V, but the work was delayed until right of way was obtained early this year.
“Due to the high number of accidents that have occurred at this intersection, it had to be completed as soon as possible this year,” he said.
