NORTH FORSYTH — A north Forsyth teenager was shot in the stomach Saturday afternoon while he and his father cleaned a gun that accidentally discharged, officials said.
The 18-year-old was standing next to his father in a north Forsyth house about 5 p.m. Saturday as the 42-year-old cleaned the Smith & Wesson .40 pistol, according to Epifanio Rodriguez, a spokesman with the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office.
His father accidentally shot the firearm, wounding the young man in his abdomen.
The teen’s father and a 33-year-old woman, whose relationship to the men wasn’t immediately clear, drove him to Forsyth County Fire Station 8 on Keith Bridge Road.
From there, the teen was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville with what were described as non-life threatening injuries.
“If you’re cleaning a weapon, make sure you’re doing it safely and that you know it’s not loaded. Check and double check,” Rodriguez said. “In law enforcement, we get a second person to clear it just to be sure you avoid an accidental shooting and anybody getting hurt.”
He added that charges are neither pending nor expected.
