Our community has a great opportunity to make a wise and much needed investment in our future. The referendum to renew the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) is one of the most significant decisions our community has had the opportunity to make in many years. With the county budget already strained due to the economy, there has never been a better time to renew our SPLOST to fund infrastructure improvements. It is important for each of us to know the facts and to make intelligent decisions when voting on the future of our community.
First and most importantly, a Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax is a tax. SPLOST VII is not about the jail, it's about yet another tax for another six years. It takes $20 billion dollars in sales to generate $200 million for the SPLOST VII projects.
Nothing has broken my heart more than the devastation that remains after a tornado last week ripped through my hometown, destroying homes, schools, businesses and lives.
For most people the concept of a hometown isn't complicated.
A recent headline read: "Citizenship question will not be added to 2010 census."
